Global Warming & Population Explosion, Thoughts On

Beginnings, Economy, Heavy Lifting

The liberal blogashere is quite exercised about the probable dire effects of global warming but no one seems ready to confront the “elephant” threatening life on our favorite planet: population explosion.  The few who try to discuss it postulate that birth control along with the disinclination of the affluent to have many children will fix everything. However any thinking person with an ability to calculate knows they will be too little too late. The population explosion choo-choo has left the station and not even Denzell Washington has a chance of stopping it. A few billion more will be born before birth reduction efforts and crop yield improvements will kick in to begin braking the trend. Those who survive the decimation of the poors’ children must find a way to try to get a share of the earth’s very limited resources and the way they choose may be violent and messy.

What will happen then? Who knows? The earth’s history seems to include corrections for situations that have become out of balance. What will this correction be? Only something on the order of a global nuclear war seems likely. In this case humankind steps up to correct the mess it created.

As I think about this there’s no wonder Al Gore et al have not tackled it.

Recent Birthday

Recently I celebrated another birthday. Folks have asked which one it was. I have to tell them it requires 3 words to tell which birthday it was, and since the middle word is the “F” word I really can’t respond.

Rose Parade Floats

Stories

From time to time, around this time of the year, I get the idea to go to Sierra Madre to view the Rose Parade floats. Usually, if I lie down for a while the idea goes away. Years ago I did that at least once. My memory is not of floats; it’s of floral things surrounded by hundreds of viewing persons about 10 deep. The thought came to me again today, and I thought today had advantages. The thing I disliked before about it was the crowds, but today a light rain was falling that I was sure would deter most viewers. So, I went. Thanks to having already parked my car in Pasadena by City Hall, getting there was easy. I took the MTA Gold Line from Memorial Park station. When I got off at Sierra Madre Villa the MTA had provided a free shuttle bus to the viewing grounds.

Oh yes, my story is running on but here are some pictures I took with my Droid phone. I was right in thinking there would be less viewers this time because of the rain, but I didn’t think of the effect on viewing the fact that most viewers standing in front of floats were holding largish, dripping umbrellas. Also, it was cold for a Southern California day, but I’ll always have my pictures just as what’s-their-names will always have Paris.

It’s Banana Republic Time

Economy, Heavy Lifting, United States, Wisdom I Have Learned

In November those of us who vote, if only by slipping on our slippers, opening another beer and turning the TV louder, have the opportunity to turn “USA NO. 1!!!” into an English speaking Banana Republic (even though Hawaii produces only about 10,000 tons/year — and, yes, it is one of the “50” states).

We will be aided, in fact led, to bring about this political change through the efforts of the Democratic politicians that some of us have been so naive as to vote for in the past, those same brave patriots who are trying desperately to leave the halls of Congress without casting a substantive vote on any (even possibly controversial) bill.

Load up the Senate with the nut cases (following in honorable footsteps) as they run for election from places like Nevada and Alaska. Bring back Steven Colbert and other thought leaders to testify this time before Senate Committees. Put C-Span on your list of cable comedy channels.

It should be a fun couple of years!

Sequoia and Yosemite National Parks

After Egypt Sequoia and Yosemite parks couldn’t be more different in landscape; although they do get quite warm in the summer.

In addition to links to the many photos I brought back I thought of making ones to the official Web sites for the parks. Instead, I thought information on the California redwoods was likely to be much more interesting.

Old Vaudeville Routine

Humor, Sayings, Stories, Wisdom I Have Learned

There were two comedians who had a long running vaudeville routine. One called himself Bad Enough and the other went by the moniker Well Enough. Vaudeville audiences dwindled and the pair fell upon Hard Times (a street not far from “Times” Square). They started squabbling, about money — of course. One thing led to another, punches were thrown, and they finally ended up in court before Judge O. Noyoudont.

After they had finished telling their stories the judge laid a small fine on Well Enough, but he threw the proverbial book at Bad Enough: a $1000 fine, 5 nights in jail and probation for a year. Bad Enough couldn’t understand, so he asked the judge for an explanation of why he had received what he considered a harsh sentence. The judge was surprised by his question, shook his head a few times to clear his head, then looked down at him and explained, “I’m trying to get you to learn to leave Well Enough alone.”

Many Thanks to Flip Wilson of Delightful Memory!
